No one had batted an eye when Sonia had checked in to the hotel in London. The hotel staff had thought she might be a foreign princess who had come for the masquerade ball hosted by a Miss Desparux. She hadn’t bothered to correct them. By the time that the foreigner had gotten there, Sonia herself would be long gone.
Did she feel guilty about the hotel staff giving her the most luxurious room in the hotel? Of course she did, but this was a job that only she could do. It was what Mina would have wanted her to do. Well, maybe without all the lying and stealing but this is what Sonia was meant to do.
“Time to get started.” She smiled before taking out a laptop from her bag and took a seat.
The computer opened up to the page she had been looking at for the past few days. The Masquerade Ball homepage contained the information about the event and its host. Lady Desperuax was not her target. However. Her target was Mr. Wrightworth. A man who was rich amongst many of his friends, and also one of the cruelest. No one could prove it but a rumor had started that Mr. Worth had stolen money from an orphanage.
Sonia had done her research. This man was a loan shark hiding under the guise of being a well-known businessman who had risen up the social ladder through very bad means. It was her job to put a stop to it. Mr. Worth had checked in to the hotel for this very event. Sonia was about to ruin his night.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Her fingers moved quickly along the keyboard as she remotely hacked into the man’s computer. All she needed was a password. That was easy enough.
“Your password is easy enough Mr. Wrightworth,” she said as she typed in the words “Le ombre della fortuna” The shadows of fortune in Italian.
Password accepted.
Her smile was innocent enough but anyone who knew what Sonia was up to would prove that innocence was something that she lived for. “And now to donate all your money to the local orphanage.” She clicked enter.
BEEP! BEEP!
Sonia’s brow furrowed. That should have worked. The only way her technique wouldn’t have worked was if there was another hacker on the scene. She had made sure to cover her tracks, so it was obviously not Mr. Wrightworth’s men.
A small ringing came from her computer. “You have a call, would you like to pick up?” the voice in her computer asked. The number that came up was one she did not recognize. Her blue eyes gazed around making sure no one else was here before accepting.
A man appeared on the screen. He had very wild brown hair and it looked like he was wearing a labcoat. If Sonia could have guessed he must have been a scientist at some point.
“Can I help you?” she asked politely.
The man looked confused. “Uh, I am trying to contact the person who hacked into Mr. Wrightworth’s account.”
Sonia giggled. “That’s me.”
The man looked very confused. “You? You are the hacker?” he asked.
“The one and only.” She replied kindly.
“Forgive me for staring, but you do not look like a hacker. You look well like a…”
“A noble? A princess? A ballerina?” she asked naming off many things that people had called her. “I can see the confusion.”
“My name is Flint Lockwood.” He said still looking at her like she was an alien. “I am trying to get into this man’s account.”
Sonia frowned. “I am sorry sir, but I cannot allow you to do that. This money is going to the orphanage.” She said. “No other hacker is going to take it for their own.”
Flint looked at her again, before smiling. “Ah, then I see we are on the same page then! Yes very good!” he said quickly. “I too am trying to give the orphans back their money.”
“I see. Then we are on the same side Mr. Lockwood.” Sonia said gently. “Though I do have to ask how you managed to contact me.”
“I’m a hacker Miss, nothing can escape my lines of work.”
Sonia nodded, “Tell me, Mr. Lockwood, what is that you wish of me?”
“Well, Miss, I have been watching your skills and I have to say that I am impressed. My gang would like to invite you to join our academy.”
“Your academy?” she asked with a raised eyebrow.
“It is an academy that teaches others like yourself how to be great thieves and give back what the rich have stolen” Flint sounded very proud, almost like he had prepared this speech before.
“Hmmm, it sounds interesting.” She said. “Is it from all the rich people?”
“No, just the corrupt.”
Good. That meant Mina was safe from getting in the way or her getting hurt. “Very well, Mr. Lockwood. I shall come.”
“Very good Miss.” Flint said. “Though before you go. I have to ask how did you get Mr. Worth’s password?”
Sonia couldn’t help but smile. “That was easy, I just bypassed his security system and gained entry to his files.”
Flint could only stare at the girl, causing Sonia to giggle. “What? You thought I was just a pretty face?” she asked before turning. “Now if you’ll excuse me Mr. Lockwood, I have a party to crash.”
