Not much had changed since Bunny had been here last, oh sure he wasn’t as cute and tiny and helpless as he once was, but he wasn’t any of those things now…but the city was still the same. It still smelled, looked and sounded the same as it did back then, only Bunny now stood up and walked down the street on two legs instead of four and he could avoid getting hit by a car a lot more easily.
But Bunny wasn’t there to walk down memory lane; he hiked up the collar of his jacket and ducked down an alleyway…where his business was. His phone rang; he quickly looked down at the number and saw that it was Once-ler calling him…for the hundredth time.
He decided to answer it this time, “Hello?” “Bunny, thank goodness. I’ve been trying to reach you for the past hour, where are you? Are you alright?”
“Don’t worry, Boss, I’m fine,” Bunny leaped into the air and landed on the roof of the warehouse, “I’m just taking care of something. I’ll be back…soon.”
“How soon is soon? I’ve found us another job”
“Soon is…” Bunny’s ear sung around, they were picking up the sound of heavy boots rushing towards him; he was just able to jump out of the way of a punch that followed though and smashed his phone, “…when I’m done.”
Before him stood a tall, Amazon of a teenager, her wild mane of hair blew in the wind. She turned to face him, burning golden eyes looking straight at him, “This is private property, buzz off.”
“Sorry, but I’ve got some business with your boss.”
Both have them stared the other one down, neither wanted to back down they rushed towards each other. Their bodies engaged in a sort of dance, both being able to anticipate the other’s moves. Bunny was impressed, it had been awhile since anyone had been able to match him, the teen’s fists suddenly swerved in a way that caught Bunny off guard sending him to the ground.
The teen pinned him to the ground with her heavy boot, “Not bad,” He told her, “Not many have been able to last this long.”
The teen just scoffed, “You weren’t even trying.”
Bunny was taken aback but soon nodded his head, “You’re right, I wasn’t.”
“Quit messing around.” The teen took her boot off of Bunny’s chest, “and give me a real fight.”
Bunny leaped up and took off his jacket, “Alright, fair. You’ve earned a real fight.”
He didn’t waste anytime rushing forward, taking the teen off guard only with the first punch. When he went for a second, she caught his punch and sent him flying. He quickly shot back and landed a kick to her face, causing her to step back a few feet but she hardly seemed phased. They continued their dance, actually landing blows on each other but neither seemed too tired.
“So what’s your deal anyways, Bunnyman?” The teen finally asked, “Why are you…?”
“What? 6 feet tall and ruggedly charming?”
“Uh, something like that…”
“I was normal once, use to live right here near the city. These scientists found me, took me back to their lab and injected me with something that made me bigger, stronger, and smarter then I had been.”
“Why did they do that?”
“They did several tests before I finally found out why, they wanted to make a super solider and thought using animals was a great idea. The project was pulled once the company’s executives stopped funding the scientists. I was to be decommissioned but I was able to escape. I couldn’t go back to my old life, so I became hired muscles to whoever could pay me until I met someone who taught me that helping those who can’t help themselves is a lot more rewarding.”
The teen rolled her eyes, in that moment Bunny was able to trip her and knock the girl to the ground. He hopped on top of her, “What’s your story?” The girl looked at him confused, “Oh come on, everyone has one! And I just told you mine, so spit it out. What’s yours?” he would consider it payment, Bunny didn’t really like talking about his past and he wanted to hear what this girl had to say seeing how she had just given him an great fight.
She just lay there for a full minute before letting out a deep sigh, “If you must know, I was born here. My parents divorced not long after my sister was born and my mom died a couple of years ago in a fire…”
“The Vipers?” The girl nodded. The Vipers was the local gang, they were the ones who Bunny wanted to see that night. They had been charging people money to ‘protect’ them and if they didn’t comply they would punish them until they did.
“My sister and I were put into foster care and separated. I never stopped trying to look for her, I escaped every single house I was sent to and eventually I found her. We both started living on the streets, I did everything I could to protect her…but then I stole from the Vipers…They took my sister, they’ll kill her if I don’t protect their ‘interests’.”
Bunny thought for a moment and then smiled, “Tell you what, kid, help me take down the Vipers and we can rescue your sister while doing so.” He got off her and extended his hand towards her.
The teenager seemed to be taken aback by Bunny’s words for a split second but soon a warm smile spread across her face and she took his hand, “You’ve got yourself a deal, Bunnyman.”
“It’s Bunnymund actually. E. Aster Bunnymund. And you are?”
“Jasper.”
“Well Jasper, it’s a pleasure meeting you.” They shock hands to seal the deal and walked towards the emergency staircase, they went down into the building where the vipers were, 20 something group of real punks.
The leader was a tall, skinny, ‘handsome’ man with, leaning over the table looking at a map of all the gang’s territory, “Ah good Jasper, you’re…back.” He looked from Jasper to Bunny, “What is this? You getting soft on me?”
“I’m only going to ask this once, Kevin,” Jasper cracked her knuckles “Give me my sister.”
Kevin laughed and it infected the rest of the gang, “You must be joking.”
“You’ll know when I’m joking.”
All the gang members got up and circled around Jasper and Bunny, “So you want to play hero? Fine, it’ll be a shame to see you go but we can always find someone else.” Kevin snapped his fingers, “Take m’ boys.”
Jasper let out an animalistic roar and charged forward taking on half of the gang all at once; Bunny joined her in the thick of battling the other half of the gang. It took mere seconds to take them all down until none were left.
“Not bad.” Jasper and Bunny looked up, Kevin was standing with a young girl struggling to get out of Kevin’s grasp, and he was holding a gun to her head.
“Amethyst!” Jasper tried to move towards both of them.
“Don’t take another step! Or I swear I’ll blow the brat’s brains out!”
Bunny held Jasper back, “Okay, we won’t…“ Bunny placed one hand up but slowly moved the other down to his belt and pulled out a boomerang. He threw it and it hit the hand that was keeping Amethyst in place, Kevin cried out in pain and dropped the young girl, who quickly ducked out of the guys arm. When Kevin tried to aim at her he came face to face with Jasper, the gun went off and Kevin was down on the ground. “Jasper! Are you alright?”
Jasper stayed where she was for awhile before she turned to look at Bunny, the bullet had grazed her cheek, “yeah, I’m fine.” She said smiling.
They tied up the whole Viper gang and called the police to let them know where they could find the gang members. As they were walking away from the warehouse, Jasper holding onto Amethyst so she wouldn’t loose her again, Bunny finally turns to her and asked, “So what are you going to do now?”
Jasper shrugged, “Don’t know. Probably just go back to what I was doing before the Vipers came into my life, looking after this little trouble maker.” Amethyst laughed and buried deeper into her sister.
“By yourself?”
“Yeah, you have a problem with that?”
Bunny shrugged back, “A bit, because I was wondering if you wanted to stay with me, if you want to.”
Jasper looked at him, “Like a adoption?”
“Yeah. I’ve never taken care of children or had any of my own but it be better and probably safer then on the streets.”
The silence hung between the two warriors, but in the end it wasn’t up to either of them, “Let’s go for it, sis!” Amethyst said finally, “He’s the first person to ever ask to adopt both of us.”
Bunny laughed, “Of course I’ll take both of you. A bond between siblings isn’t something anyone should mess with.”
A smile warmed its way onto Jasper’s face, “Well then, you’ve got a deal, Bunnyman.”
“It’s Bunnymund.”
