A young woman named Marina was in the shopping district with her sunglasses on, looking at some outfits that did have her taste of style. She was smirking, a smirk that no one would try to notice, as she was on the road to steal, not to buy. She recently did see a lot of newspaper articles mentioning that poverty was going pretty high in the city, so, she did at least wanted to make a change in the area on where it was the most poor. She was walking around the stores, seeing on what to get for the charity drive. "Hm, so many choices, so many clothes to choose from, so many people to help." She thought to herself as she looked at the outfits. Luckily, with her, she brought her own clothing to get the clerk's attention in order for her to get the clothing. She brought her bag of tricks to the changing room and she quickly put on a bagger's outfit, as though she needed to try to get the clerk to believe her.
"Perfect disguise." She thought to herself as she walked up to the clerk, with a face of willingness, and she had her facial expression of begging on. As soon as the clerk saw the "woman" beggar, she looked up at him with a look of neediness. "May I help you, miss?" The clerk asked, raising an eyebrow. Marina looked at him, coughing as though she came from the poor streets. "Sir, my child is extremely sick, and she needs clothing, right away. She wanted a dress, a beautiful and shining dress, like those models she saw on television. Anything would be fine." Marina "begged" with fake tears coming from her eyes. The clerk looked at her, with a look of sympathy and started to look for her. Marina smirked, as though the act was working, and hoped that the dress that she was planning to get would be useful for any person on the street to wear. The clerk was looking through the racks, of many dresses to satisfy Marina. After looking for at least a couple of minutes, the guy came out with a blue dress with diamonds. "Would your daughter like this?" Marina, hearing the guy's question, nodded and "coughed". That dress, my daughter has been looking for.. for a long time now." The clerk gave it to her and rang up the cash register. "Ok, time to pull off the fake fry then." She thought with a smirk and looked up at him once again.
"Sir, my good sir. My daughter is dying of a serious illness, and the last thing that she wants to wear before she does is that dress that you have in your hand. I've been spending money on mainly medicine and food for her. Please sir, I need that dress.." The clerk looked at her with sympathy, and he put the dress in the bag and gave it to her. "Give my regards to your daughter, miss." He said, handing the dress over. Marina grabbed the bag and walked out of the place with a small wave. Now, with the dress in her hand, she had to quickly get out of the beggar's outfit. So, she got into an alley and changed into her usual outfit which was jeans and a sleeveless tank top. She still had the dress in her hand and, she was looking for a donation box to put the outfit in. After looking for a couple of minutes, she found a red box that was taking any piece of clothing for the army. So, Marina put the expensive dress in the box and grinned to herself. "Another day, another person happy." She said to herself as she put her headphones in her ear as she was looking for another place to steal an outfit for a good purpose, while walking. She did find a wallet on the ground that was full of cash, and she smirked, knowing on what to do with it, if someone catches her with the money. A couple of seconds later, she was tapped on the shoulder, by a young woman raising an eyebrow. "Are you going to return that to the police?" She asked.
Marina looked at her, and had to think of something to get away with the money in her hand. It was obviously too late to go into her outfit she used in the store to gain sympathy, just, so, she could grab the outfit. Now, some random woman approached her, she thought hard for a couple of seconds, and got on her hands and knees and stared at the woman with a look of as though she was going to cry. "Miss, you have to understand, my, son, is dying of a bad cold. I do not have any money to bring him to the doctors so, this amount of cash is the only way to help him get to recovery so, I could get him medicine and wonderful help. You, do not know on what it's like to be a single parent." As the woman looked into Marina's eyes, she felt tears coming through her eyes, feeling as for her. She felt sorry, that she just walked on what she said in suspicion. As the woman left, she got up on her feet. "Sucker." She said to herself with a smirk as she walked over to a place on where the money could be donated. She put back on her headphones, and put the wallet in her bag on where her beggar outfit was, including make up and a wig to make her look elderly. Few minutes later, she heard bells ringing from people who were looking for donations. Marina walked up to them, and sneakily put the hundred dollar bills and the rest of the cash in the buckets. "My, thank you for your generous donation. Would you like to buy some cookies, miss?" Marina nodded and pat the boy's head. "No, just use the money for a charity or something." She replied, and gave the bucket the one last quarter she found in the wallet, and walked on by.
Marina not only felt satisfied on what she did, but, also felt that her acts on begging and falls crying worked perfectly. "That's a wrap." She thought out loud silently as she put on her sunglasses, and was about to walk on to her apartment, until another lady tapped her on the shoulder. "Ugh, another one that I have to put an act on?" She said to herself, with a huff as she turned around, taking off her headphones and sunglasses. Instead, she stood face to face with a young blonde haired woman, and she had long hair that Marina did admire. That was unusual to see a person like her, and raised an eyebrow. "You do not have to put on a show for me. I think you did enough." The blonde haired lady commented, with a soft smile. Marina felt her heart beat pacing as she raised the other eyebrow. Was this woman an interpol or a police officer? So, she took a step back with caution. "Miss, you do not have to go. I am not an officer. I see that you are a grifter, or are you a street person grabbing items for the heck of it?" Marina, hearing the woman's question, thought that she was crazy asking her an unusual question like that. She took a bit of a deep breath and nodded, as though she was telling complete honesty. "Well, yes. I am a grifter." "Oh, how wonderful! Tell me your ways, miss!" The blonde haired woman looked at her with a bit of excitement. Marina thought that was crazy, wondering if the young woman was a grifter herself, and not just asking her questions. So, she took the hand of the blonde haired girl and they both sat on a bench, and Marina looked up at her. "Alright, let's say, my father, who was a single parent, was a grifter himself. You see, my parents divorced because of my father being a grifter, and she didn't want my father to be like that, but like him, I wanted to be this way to, you know help people, and especially with the poor ones on the street." The blonde haired woman listened to her story and nodded as though she understood. "I see, and I have to agree with you, with you mentioning that being a grifter is not that bad." She commented, with a sweet smile appearing on her face. Hearing the young woman agreeing with her made Marina feel better about her acting coming into play.
Marina looked up at the young lady and gave a small grin. "Yeah, I know. Being a grifter is it bad, especially if you want to do it for helping people is not that bad; I even had to pull off the "crybaby" act to her get the items I need." The blonde haired young lady chuckled at that comment, thinking it was pretty hilarious. "The crybaby act? Never heard of that one. Sounds original. Oh, by the way, miss. I'm Rapunzel. I am a grifter at a school named Leverage where you could learn on how to improve your thieving." As Marina heard that, she raised an eyebrow. "A school based on thieving? That's a new one. Pretty interesting, as I do say so myself. I guess that you're looking for grifters as well? Oh, I'm Marina. Pleasure to meet you, Rapunzel." She greeted, with a small smirk and winked at her. As Rapunzel heard her question, she nodded, with yet another soft smile. "Yes, all types of thieves we are looking for exactly, including grifters. So, yes, we are looking for them too." She responded with a wink. Marina felt as though Rapunzel were getting along pretty well, as they were both grifters and she assumed that the blonde woman had to pull off acts on her own to gain money, or items. As the sun started to go down, Rapunzel looked at her as she got off the bench. "Well, I assume that you are on your way home, Marina. I understand that you must have had a long day acting your way to the top to steal items. So, we both could part ways, while I do tell my boss about you. I think you'll make a good addition to the academy. From what you told me, I think my boss would like you for sure. Have a nice rest of your evening, Marina." Rapunzel said, and Marina waved to her and she went to her apartment.
When she got home, she made herself some pizza for a late dinner and watched television, and then, fell asleep. "Long day." She thought as she slept the night away. The next morning, she woke up and grabbed the mail. Most of them were bills, and she huffed, "every month." She was grumbling as she put the envelopes on her table stand. The next envelope contained a letter that was addressed to her. She raised an eyebrow an opened it. "Is this the school Rapunzel was talking about?" She thought as she opened it. The letter mentioned that was accepted into the academy. "Heh, glad Rapunzel liked my acting after all." She said to herself as she stared to pack, thinking that her dad would be proud of her. As she reached the academy, she took out a photo of her and her dad and held it close. "Dad, I'm continuing the legacy. I'll make you proud." She said softly, and opened the doors to the school, hoping that being a grifter would make her look good instead of bad. "Well, here we go, on my way to learning." She thought as she opened the doors to knowledge, as she had confidence to at least make a difference in the place and outside the academy.
