The marketplace was packed, as was expected. It was the daily bazar. Elize had been waiting for this day. With all the people around, stealing some food wouldn’t be too hard, and she was pretty sure a shopkeeper wouldn’t miss an item or two. Little blonde took a deep breath and tried to blend in with the crowd.
The first stall was what drew her eyes towards it. The fruit stand had all kinds of fruit, they all looked juicy and well picked. It took enough willpower for Elize to not reach up and grab everything.
“Concentrate.” She said quietly. “Concentrate.”
She was getting better at creating a double of herself. At first it took her a matter of hours, but now it only took her a few minutes. The little girl smiled at the double. Slowly, both made their way over to the stand, Elize put her hands on the counter as if surveying her options. The double did the same. Good.
Elize slowly slipped an apple into her hands and carefully moved towards the center of town. She could get away with it! Part of her felt a wave of guilt though, stealing was wrong. But what else could she do? No one had wanted her at the orphanage. She didn’t have another choice.
“THIEF!” The shout caused her to turn around. Her double was fading in and out until it had fully disappeared. The store keep was glaring at her. Angry. He was angry.
Before she could process it, her feet moved, she ran. The sounds of the bazar were muffled but she did hear the “Guards, stop that thief!” and the sound of rushing footsteps closely behind.
If she got caught they would take her back to the orphanage. She couldn’t take that.
Freak!
No one will adopt you!
Why are you even here?!
Tears started to form in her eyes, no. She wouldn’t go there again. The guard footsteps were drawing closer as she darted into an alleyway, only to end up on the ground.
“Ow.” She muttered rubbing her head.
“Are you alright?” Elize looked up to see a well dressed man staring down at her. His brown eyes filled with concern.
“Ah, …I…um..” she muttered, as she quickly stood just as the guards were coming up. She slowly moved behind the man and looked behind him worried.
The man didn’t seem too worried as the guards slowed and looked at him. “Can I help you gentlemen?” he asked.
“Sir, this girl a thief.” The head guard barked “Do you know her?”
Elize looked at the man who stared back. Slowly, he smiled before turning back to the well dressed gentlemen. “Yes sir, this is my sister.” He said.
“Your sister just stole from a fruit merchant. She is a criminal.”
The man sighed. “A criminal, she is a little girl.” He said, “How about I just pay you for your time and I’ll handle the rest.”
The guards seemed to look confused before nodding. Elize watched as the man pulled out a gold coin and threw it to the guard, without another word the guards left, leaving them alone in the alley.
“Why did you do that?” Elize asked confused as she backed up against the wall.
“I saw what you did.” The man said. “I didn’t think mystics could be so young.”
Elize’s eyes widened, he had seen that? “So, what are you going to do?” she asked, her hands clenching together so tight they turned white. “Are you going to sell me or kill me?”
The man couldn’t help but look agast. “Why would I kill you?” he asked “I may be a mercenary princess but I don’t kill kids.”
“Then why did you help me?”
“Well, cuz you looked like you needed help.” The man said. “I can take it you are stealing because you don’t have an option right?”
Elize nodded. “Uh huh. Thank you for the help Mr….”
“Alvin.” The man said. “It was my pleasure Princess.”
“My…my name is Elize.” She muttered quietly before giving a bigger smile. “Thank you.”
“One thank you is enough Elize.” Alvin said ruffling her hair with his gloved hand. “I just wanted to help.”
