How he got a letter from the Once-ler's Gang: Armin’s parents seemingly just disappeared, leaving their son in the care of his elderly grandfather. To keep Armin’s mind off of his increasing age and pile up of health problems, he gave Armin a book about the different places of the world, which he carries everywhere. He made sure Armin was fed, cared for, and got a good education. Armin skipped a few grades due to his smarts, which he was proud of. When his grandfather died, Armin was left everything his grandfather ever owned, which left Armin with a considerable amount of wealth. He was modest about it though, living like a normal student, and despised rich people when he saw them flaunt their wealth, thinking they were higher than everyone else. Armin, wanting them to be knocked down a peg, and not being able to fight them physically, built a gadget to spy on them and catch all their shady business on camera, while he followed them in order to grab the gadget, should it malfunction. The plan was to expose their dirty secrets and post them where the world would see. While doing so, he crossed paths with Winry, who showed interest in his skills and told him about an academy for thieves, which he immediately decided to join.
