Years ago, Gildarts met and fell in love with a woman named Cornelia. Their relationship blossomed and the two eventually married each other, however, Gildarts was so fixated on his work that Cornelia left him, leaving Gildarts completely unaware that she was carrying his child.
This lead him to be completely dedicated to the force, and had no idea if his family was alive or not. At hearing about the disappearing children, he suspected it was to do with the recent rise of the Once-ler and his gang. Wanting to try and protect any future disappearances, Gildarts wanted to do something about it and became more focused than ever in bringing Once-ler and his gang to justice.
